Chapter 30: The Montgomery GI Bill® - Active Duty
Eligibility:
- Served on Active Duty since July 1, 1985.
- Contributed $1,200 to an education fund.
- Have completed a qualifying amount of “honorable” active-duty service.
Entitlement:
- 36 months of full-time benefits. Entitlement may extend to end of term if it expires during the term.
- Current monthly benefit rates are available on the VA website.
Chapter 35:The Dependents Educational Assistance Program
Eligibility:
- Must be a dependent of a member of the Armed Forces who :
- Died while on active duty or as the result of a service-connected disability.
- 100% permanently and totally disabled for a service-related reason.
- Children generally are eligible for benefits between the ages of 18 and 26, but in certain instances benefits may begin before age 18 and continue beyond age 26.
Entitlement:
- Up to 45 months of full-time benefits.
Chapter 1606: The Montgomery GI Bill - Selective Reserves
Eligibility:
- Must be active reservist with 6 year service obligation.
- Completion of initial active duty for training (IADT).
- Eligibility ends with separation from Selected Reserve.
Entitlement:
- 36 months of full-time benefits.

Chapter 1607: The Reserve Educational Assistance Program (REAP)
Eligibility:
- Served at least 90 consecutive days on or after September 11, 2001, of active duty under a contingency operation. Note: “Contingency operation” means the current Iraq or Afghanistan operations and may include other operations.
- Full-time National Guard service extending for at least 90 consecutive days and service is authorized under section 502(f), title 32, U.S.C., authorized by the President or Secretary of Defense for a national emergency, and supported by federal funds.
Entitlement:
- 36 months of full-time benefits.
