Massachusetts Education and Career Opportunities, Inc. (MassEdCO, Inc.) is a statewide network of service sites that provides education and career advising to over 14,000 individuals each year. MassEdCO’s mission is to assist individuals in identifying a potential career path and the education programs that will lead to that career, and help them enroll in, pay for and succeed in the appropriate education program.
GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. It is a national initiative to encourage more young people to have high expectations, stay in school, study hard and take the right courses to go to college.
GEAR UP Massachusetts serves low-income priority students in five cohorts across seven of the Commonwealth’s most impoverished areas: Boston, Holyoke, Lawrence, Lowell, New Bedford, Springfield, and Worcester.
The Urban Scholars Program is a year-round program structured around after-school classes and an intensive seven-week summer institute at the University of Massachusetts Boston.
The mission of the Urban Scholars Program is to identify and to prepare Boston’s gifted and talented urban youth (ages 11-19), especially those who are low-income individuals and first-generation college bound students, to successfully enroll in and complete college.
Boston HERC is a church-based college advising and preparation program for youth ages 11 through 18 years. They organize Passport, a mentoring program for high school juniors and seniors designed to enstill in students the skills, motivation, and determination to enter and complete college successfully. Participants attend weekly workshops and activities from 4-6pm and 6-hours a week of SAT-prep classes.
